This essay was written as part of the course 'knowledge based economy' at the University of Amsterdam. It's subject is technological development and it provides a detailed description of the 'lifecycle' that technologies 'go true'. The emergence, the perseverance and the ephemerality of technologies is reflected upon. The second part of the writing discusses the possibilities of political intervention in these development processes. The piece focuses on evolutionary explanations and the possibilities (and desirability) of social / political intervention in technological development processes. The self-organizing character of these kinds of systems is also shortly touched upon.
